Three Day Rift Betas: Good Or Bad?

Rift is now in the middle of its sixth beta.  The betas are scheduled to last 3 days, but are extended a day or two on a few.  Is this the best way to test a game?  Is it attracting more tourists than testers?  Does it end up selling more games making it more like an open beta than a closed beta, or does it possibly lose sales for players who try it, and end up not buying it?

I just don't feel like players are really testing.  If you ask most players they are using it to get that jump start on someone who may of not played the beta once release comes.  I have just found most of the beta times inconvenient, and never enough time in advance to plan for it.

Do I feel like I am contributing to the beta test?  I would say no if you compare it to my World of Warcraft beta testing, and when I beta tested Shrouded Isles for DAOC.  I felt obligated to login, and progress my character every single day.  Guilds were formed, communities created, enemies made, and so on.  In Rift the beta seems like new faces every time.  It doesn't seem like most players are pushing the level caps.  This could spell disaster later on.

Warhammer Online learned that the hard way during their testing.  Basically no end game testing was initially tested so once players started hitting forts, flipping zones, taking cities, 18 hour lockouts, and etc they were scrambling to fix stuff.  They didn't really know if the King fight worked.

The three day betas have given players a huge opportunity to test out souls, and the class they will eventually play, but once again nothing end game being tested to see how balance will be at level 50.  I still want to see how pvp prestige, and pvp souls work like.  I want beta seven or eight to let us build level 50 template characters.

Is beta really about letting players grind out levels?  It should be about testing content so each beta should of given players the opportunity to /level 20 /level 27 /level 33 and etc.  This would give Rift devs a better idea if everyone was debugging dungeons, and pvp instances.

I don't know.  It could be that I am just burned out on betas, and have no desire to put in countless hours for a character that is just going to get deleted.  What do you think?   Do you prefer longer closed beta testing for several months with a week open beta, or the short 3 day beta spurts?

The Secret World MMORPG

I just accidentally ran across this EA press release that they are co-publishing with Funcom a new MMORPG called The Secret World.  It is a modern day setting with three factions.

There isn't a whole lot of information yet, but from the screenshots it reminds me of a FPS.  It has no classes, or levels.  You either have a pistol, machine gun, or a sword.  You can also learn voodoo, martial arts, and more.

It sounds like much of the world will be of real towns, and each faction fights for control, and power.  It sounds like it will have pvp which will be exciting to see if this time they get it right with three factions.

It sounds like there will be guild bases called Cabals which you can decorate, and stuff.

The game looks pretty cool from the screenshots, and definitely changes the way you think an MMORPG should be like.  I can't wait to see how this one turns out.

I Will Be Playing Rift Warfronts All Weekend

Once again I will be beta testing Rift this weekend.  It will be my first taste of PvP in the game.  I am really excited to see how it all works.  Rift Warfronts from the outside looking in looks like a Battleground, or Scenario from World of Warcraft, or Warhammer Online.

I am really looking forward to teaming up with Oak, Zezzle, and Hedgewick in the Warfronts.  I hope we make tons of Guardians cry themselves to sleep this weekend when we destroy them in pvp.  I think our group setup will be pretty deadly to anyone who tries to fight us.

I will be getting plenty of sleep tonight to ensure some long gaming sessions this weekend.  I really want to see the PvP since 99% of my MMO gaming consists of playing PvP.  In prior Rift betas I have checked out some of the PvP gear, and it is simply amazing.  How does it compare to PvE gear?  No idea since we have no level 50 PvE gear to compare the PvP gear too.

Will I be giving up World of Warcraft to play Rift?  Yes without a doubt.  I have a hard time playing multiple games, and I like to devote all my time into the game I love the most.  Of course I will still play WoW until the Rift launch, but it will definitely be unsubbed as the release date of Rift inches closer.

Goblin Zone Rocks My Warlock

Okay.  I initially rolled a Troll Druid on Cataclysm launch day.  The new starter area seemed pretty cool.  Reality set in pretty quick though.  I soon realized that most of the older zones really didn't change much.  I felt myself getting in a rut, and I barely was level 12.

Now let's fast forward to today.  I logged off my Druid, and decided to make a new Goblin Warlock.   I thought the new starting area was going to be crazy busy, but really it was pretty quiet.  I guess everyone power leveled out of the starting area already.

All I can say is the Goblin Zone rocked my Warlock from quest number one.  Blizzard did everything right in this zone.  You are questing, but it doesn't feel like you are questing.  You are doing stuff that puts the word F-U-N into grinding levels.

I am driving this car around the starter city, riding rockets, parachuting, being a weed whacker, operating goblin gadgets in almost all the quests.  It is just amazing.

I suggest everyone makes a Goblin, and experiences this new vision of a starting zone.  You don't even think about your level, xp, or anything.  It is like that book where you can't put it down.  I keep finding myself saying just one more quest, oh wait just one more quest, and so on.

The Goblin zone is absolutely addicting.

What do you think about the Goblin area?
