Online Gaming Password Security

Every company tries to get their players to make super secure passwords.  They suggest using capital letters, symbols, and numbers to make getting it hacked nearly impossible.  You know how easy it is to hack someones account?  The sad part is almost every gaming company uses the same technology to retrieve forgotten passwords.

This is where gaming companies are to blame.  Have you ever really thought about how easy it would be for someone to figure out the answers to some of the silly questions?  I will give you a few examples of questions that are laughable that I have ran into lately when playing games.

The first one is What is your favorite color?  Well let me take a wild shot, and figure you probably will pick black, white, green, yellow, red, and blue most likely.  See how easy I could get your password even if it was 32$%#PhseT6>$.

Another one is What was your high school mascot?  You figure somewhere out on the internet you posted what high school you went to, and most likely can be found on Facebook.  Once I know the high school you went to I can google it, and know your mascot.

How about What is your Fathers middle name?  Once again this information could be found on Facebook, and probably Zabasearch once you know his first name.

Is What is your Mother's maiden name any better?  It is crazy how easy this information could be figured out with just five minutes of Google searches.

Oh, and another one.  What is your pet's name?  I can easily find this on players Twitter, Facebook, or Google + accounts where they post pictures of their cats, and the names.

Some companies try to be one step ahead, and require you respond to a link in your email.  If I know one of your passwords the odds are your email has the same one so it isn't a problem to click the verification link.

Do you see what I am getting at here?  It isn't necessarily that players are making easy passwords, but that companies make it easy to answer the password challenge questions, or to get access to the passwords.

I think gaming companies really need to think about this, and offer more secure questions that can't be easily found on the internet.  How about something like What is the third book on the top shelf of your bookcase?, What company is on your mousepad, or slogan?  What poster do you have hanging up in your bedroom?  What is the serial number of your alarm clock?  How many miles does your car have?  Pick a number between 1 and 100000000.  What is the name of one business card in your wallet?
