After going to PAX the last two years I think it may be time to change the way gaming conventions work. Do gamers really enjoy standing in line for hours to play a game for ten minutes? Is there really a benefit to the atmosphere in the exhibition halls? Do you find yourself skipping panels because two of them you want to attend overlap?
I find many faults with the way it all works. I think there is a better way. After reading today that Onlive is putting demo kiosks in retail stores it gave me some ideas. Why not put hundreds of these kiosks in the convention center?
This would enable everyone to play the games they want to play, and standing in line only once. No more having to choose which game you are going to try. All the gaming companies can upload their new game demos to the gaming cloud for everyone to play. They can than utilize their booths more for dev talks, swag giveaways, and interaction.
Why not set up a week pass for Onlive where gaming companies upload demos, and you can stream the games from your home, work, or tablet? No more plane trips, hotels, and forged badges. At your own leisure you can enjoy any game that would be at the convention. No one would be left out. Isn't it supposed to be about the gamers?
Another idea is to make all the panels pre-recorded, and on-demand. This way you can pick, and choose what panels to watch, and never have to miss one because you were standing in line, or the panel was full, or you couldn't attend two at the same time.
