Do you look back, and think of all the great times you had in vanilla World of Warcraft? Do you wish you could go back? What made vanilla WoW so great? Would you play World of Warcraft if they created Vanilla servers?
After talking with @Longasc and @Gamergaz today on Twitter about Vanilla WoW it made me start thinking. Why did we all enjoy it back than, and now none of us really play it? Is vanilla WoW like an Ex where you seem to only remember the good stuff, and when you go back you remember why you left in the first place?
I literally loved World of Warcraft my first two years. If I wasn't sleeping I was playing. I sacrificed sleep most days to just play. It was a mad addiction, and I was out of control.
I look back, and wonder what changed in the game that eventually made me hate it. I am not sure I really know why except I think the challenge for me in PvP left. I grew up with PvP in World of Warcraft.
I remember the ongoing battles in Tarren Mill, and South Shore. It was fun. I remember the first few weeks of honor, and being there. You made rivalries with the other faction. It was fun when you took out someone you knew was a good player.
Next came the battlegrounds. It was only AV, and WSG that I remember. It was highly competitive. Your guild reputation was on the line for every loss. It wasn't about farming the most honor it was more about being able to brag on the forums. You didn't want to lose.
Remember when you only received a bg badge if you won? It made winning mean so much more. You didn't want to waste 20-30 minutes to get nothing. We literally had guild wars in WSG. I remember our PvP A-team beating Alliance all the time. We beat all their guild premades. We were that good. We were so good that alliance stopped queuing.
The old honor system where you had to play, and be good to rank up. It is easy mode now. You earn enough honor eventually everyone can become High Warlord. I liked it when only one person a week could have that honor. It made it more special.
How about CC before PvP trinkets? The trinkets ruined so many classes abilities to solo kill people. I could solo about every class, but eventually my priest became the weakest class in the game. At least it felt that way.
I think cross server battlegrounds killed the rivalries on the server. You could no longer battle with people on your server as much, and the competition died off.
I would love to go back, and play vanillla World of Warcraft. Would it be the same? I would think so, but any time I have gone back to a game after a huge absence it losts its appeal. It was nothing like I remembered. I just look back, and think how much the game has changed since 2004.
