What is the first thing players say when they try a new MMORPG? It is just another World of Warcraft clone. If I had a penny every time someone said it I would be a millionaire. Are players really looking for a new ground breaking MMORPG? Is it even possible to make an MMORPG like no other one on the market? Would players even play a non cloned World of Warcraft MMORPG?
I personally think you have to clone World of Warcraft in your game. Why do you think the world is scared of allowing cloning in every day life? They are afraid that eventually everyone will be cloned to perfection. What would the world be like if everyone was perfect? It would be like Heaven, or whatever religious belief you have.
It is the same for gaming. For MMORPG's to progress they have to clone the good parts of the game, and than fix or make better other parts. You can look at the auto industry right now. They are taking cars that people loved twenty or thirty years ago, and making them better. Would you rather drive a 67 Camaro, or a 2011 Camaro with all the safety features and amenities that cars come with these days? It is simple. You are more in love with the muscle cars looks from yesteryear, but you want the safety of todays car along with a stereo system, and not an 8 track along with the memories from your childhood.
Another example is girlfriends or boyfriends. Do you find that you are attracted to new ones that have the good traits of your ex, and maybe a few extra good traits your ex didn't have? Do you think you would really go out, and date someone completely different? It may seem that way initially, but when I look back at my ex's most of them had initial similar traits that lured me in. They somehow secretly cloned the traits I liked about my ex's, and improved on other things.
I guess that is why you will see me always playing World of Warcraft clones like Rift. It has enough of World of Warcraft, but enough new stuff that makes me want to play Rift instead of World of Warcraft. What is going to happen to MMORPG's when World of Warcraft goes away?
